Opening of the Alpine Hut Season
When Helicopters Bring Summer to the Mountains
As temperatures rise and hiking trails become free of snow, many Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) mountain huts open their doors for the summer season in June. While hikers and mountaineers look forward to memorable tours and cosy evenings at the huts, an intensive period of preparation begins for the hut wardens.
Before the first guests arrive, food, beverages, fuel, cleaning supplies, tools, and many other essential goods must be transported to these often remote mountain huts. As most SAC huts are inaccessible by road and many have no material cableway, helicopters play an indispensable role in supplying them.
Essential Support from the Air
Helicopter transport makes it possible to deliver large quantities of supplies efficiently and safely into alpine terrain. What would otherwise take days—or even weeks—to carry on foot can be completed in just a few minutes of flying time.
In the Engadin and the surrounding mountain regions in particular, many huts are located in challenging terrain. Helicopter transport is therefore essential to ensure that the huts are fully supplied and ready to welcome guests at the start of the season.
Precision Work for Pilots and Ground Crews
Every transport flight requires careful planning. Weather conditions, wind, and the geographical characteristics around each hut must all be taken into account. Pilots and ground crews work closely together to ensure that every load is delivered accurately and safely to its destination.
Throughout the summer, additional supply flights are carried out to replenish stocks whenever needed. Helicopters also play a vital role during renovation and maintenance projects, where they are often the only practical means of transporting materials.
Sustainable Supply for the Alpine Environment
Although helicopter operations are highly visible, they also help protect the fragile alpine environment. By transporting large quantities of supplies in a single flight, countless individual trips can be avoided. Helicopters also make it possible to operate mountain huts in locations that would otherwise be extremely difficult to supply.
Working Together for Unforgettable Mountain Experiences
As SAC mountain huts welcome hikers, climbers, and nature lovers this summer, a tremendous amount of work has already taken place behind the scenes—both by the hut wardens and the helicopter crews.
At Heli Bernina, we are proud to contribute to the successful operation of mountain huts across the Grisons Alps through our transport flights. We wish all hut teams and mountain enthusiasts a safe, successful, and enjoyable summer season.
